BMW Art Cars World Tour
For half a century, the BMW Art Car series has been a unique canvas for artists passionate about automobiles. This collection of 20 BMW Art Cars blends art, design, technology, innovation, motorsport and engineering, showcasing global cultural engagement through numerous initiatives in contemporary art, music, film and design. From Alexander Calder’s first Art Car to Julie Mehretu’s latest creation, these ‘rolling sculptures’ represent a cross-section of art history, including minimalism, pop art, magical realism, abstraction, conceptual art and digital art.
To celebrate the 50th anniversary, the BMW Art Car World Tour will feature exhibitions across all five continents. It begins in Europe and Asia, with notable displays at the Museum of Applied Arts and the SPARK Art Fair in Vienna, and Art Basel in Hong Kong. Julie Mehretu’s BMW M Hybrid V8 will be showcased, alongside workshops for young film and media artists across five African countries. The BMW Museum will honour the collection with a special exhibition, combining the anniversaries of the BMW Art Cars and the BMW 3 Series.
The journey began in 1975 with Alexander Calder’s BMW 3.0 CSL at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Over the years, the collection has expanded globally, featuring artists like Frank Stella, Roy Lichtenstein, Andy Warhol and more. The BMW Art Car series has significantly contributed to the inspiring dialogue between art and automobiles.
