Return of the Runabout

In 1969, Bertone captivated the automotive world with the debut of the Autobianchi A112 Runabout at the Turin International Motor Show. Over fifty years on, Bertone reimagines this iconic model with the all-new Runabout, a neo-retro revival that merges timeless design with contemporary engineering. As the inaugural model in the Bertone Classic line, the new Runabout embodies the brand’s dedication to honouring its storied past through cutting-edge craftsmanship and state-of-the-art technology.

The original Runabout was inspired by the sleek, powerful racing boats of the 1960s. Featuring a bold 55hp, 1.1 litre engine and a daring wedge-shaped silhouette, it paved the way for future automotive legends like the Fiat X1/9 and Lancia Stratos. Today’s Runabout takes this legacy to thrilling new heights, boasting a 500-hp V6 engine designed for nimble, high-performance driving. The two-seater cabin offers an exclusive, near shoulder-to-shoulder arrangement, and unlike the 1969 classic, the modern Runabout includes side-door access for ease and elegance.

To pay homage to Bertone’s rich heritage, the new Runabout comes in two configurations, each capturing the brand’s philosophy of freedom and driving pleasure. First, the Barchetta – a roofless, open-air model for those seeking an immersive, unfiltered connection with the road. And, the Targa – a versatile variant with a removable roof, blending open-top exhilaration with the refinement of an enclosed cabin.

The Runabout marks the debut of the Bertone Classic line, a series committed to reviving the brand’s most beloved designs. Each model in this line will be produced in a limited series, ensuring that collectors and connoisseurs have the rare chance to own a piece of automotive artistry. With its meticulous craftsmanship and bold lines, the Runabout stands as a testament to Bertone’s legacy of Italian design excellence.

The Bertone journey continues under the guidance of Jean-Franck and Mauro Ricci, whose passion for the brand’s legacy drives each new project. Led by visionary designer Andrea Mocellin, the Runabout’s reintroduction honours Bertone’s spirit, combining a futuristic aesthetic with Italy’s enduring tradition of iconic sports cars.
