Tailor-made success
This 1976 Porsche 934 is said to be one of 31 examples built over a two-year production run. It saw action under the Porsche-Kremer Racing banner in the 1976 German National Championship, earning a commendable fourth place within the European Grand Touring category. After enduring damage throughout that season, the vehicle underwent repairs and was then entered into the 1977 24 Hours of Le Mans. There, it clinched victory in the Group 4 GT class, securing an impressive seventh-place overall finish. The triumph continued at the 6 Hours of Silverstone in 1978, where it once again emerged victorious in its class. The car's ownership returned to Kremer Racing in Cologne, Germany, in 2006, prompting a meticulous restoration that involved a fresh white paint job adorned with the iconic Burton of London livery that the car proudly sported in 1977.
Power emanates from a turbocharged 3.0-litre flat-six engine, complete with dual water-cooled intercoolers, coupled to a four-speed manual transaxle featuring a limited-slip differential. Noteworthy additions comprise center-lock BBS wheels, adjustable anti-roll bars, a roll cage, a front spoiler, a rear wing, bolt-on fender flares, and a comprehensive fire suppression system.
Debuting in 1976 for the racing circuit, the 934 took the foundation of the production 930 model and introduced enhancements such as a prominent front spoiler designed to accommodate a centrally-mounted oil cooler, along with provisions for air and brake cooling. Adhering to the strict 2,470-pound weight requirement imposed by the FIA Group 4 regulations, the car retained several production-based elements like its door panels and power windows, while the front trunk housed a capacious 120-liter fuel tank. The 934 marked Porsche's inaugural venture into turbocharged production-based racing cars and concluded its production run after two years.
In its racing career, this particular vehicle competed as number 58 under the Porsche-Kremer Racing banner, donning a distinctive white and blue Burton of London livery. Subsequently, it underwent various color scheme changes before retiring from the racing scene in 1980. A meticulous restoration undertaken in 2006 by Kremer Racing lovingly returned the car to its 1977 appearance, complete with the names of drivers Bob Wollek, Philippe Gurdjian, and Jean-Pierre “Steve” Wielemans prominently displayed on the roof. Additional exterior features encompass hood and decklid pins, the iconic "whale tail" rear spoiler, front and rear tow hooks, rear bumperettes, and the signature bolt-on fender flares. Some signs of wear are evident on the side mirrors and door handles, with minor imperfections visible in the photo gallery provided below.
