When Giugiaro styled a Hyundai
During the early 1970s, when Hyundai was just starting out and there were no vehicle design firms in Korea, the company sought assistance from the Italian firm GFG Style, particularly its founder Giorgetto Giugiaro, to develop its first independent cars for the global market. One of these notable creations was the Pony Coupe, which was unveiled at the Turin Motor Show in 1974. Unfortunately, due to unfavourable economic conditions at the time, the Pony Coupe never entered production. However, its design served as inspiration for the iconic DeLorean DMC-12, another creation by Giugiaro. Approaching the 50th anniversary of the Pony Coupe, Hyundai has collaborated with Giugiaro and his son Fabrizio to recreate the original concept. This faithful recreation was recently showcased at an event in Lake Como, Italy, featuring the distinctive angular design, a sleek roofline, an interior true to its time, and floating gauges that prioritise the driver's experience.
