Mercedes x Andy Warhol
In 1986, Daimler-Benz commissioned legendary pop artist Andy Warhol to produce a series of original artworks to tell the story of the motor car. Infused with Warhol‘s signature style, striking colour schemes and unmistakable passion, the now world renowned ‘Cars’ series was born – which even in its incomplete state immortalised a wide range of historic classics like never before. In the book: Series Sports Cars from 1945-1980 by Frank Oleski, Warhol found his first motif. Pictured in large format on pages 94 and 95 in front of a vast landscape, a Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Gullwing with the license plate ‘EI - DR 1’.
Pictured here is that very 300 SL Gullwing which has been the subject of a 4,500 hour restoration courtesy of legendary specialist vehicle company BRABUS. This piece of automotive and modern art history once again shines as it did when it first rolled off the production line nearly 70 years ago.
With pinpoint precision, the iconic lightweight tube frame as well as every inch of the bodywork was brought back to life, accentuated by extravagant chrome elements and a breathtaking finish. With a brand new coat of paint in the SL’s original colour, this legendary sportscar is once again ready for the road.
Under the bonnet is the iconic 3.0 litre straight-six. Every single component of the SL's engine and powertrain has been restored in accordance with all original specifications.
Inside, BRABUS completely restored the interior of the SL true to the original. All the leather and fabric materials as well as all chrome elements in the cockpit impress with the same immaculate quality as they once did in 1955.
