Superstars of the Seventies
As part of Ecurie’s expanding range of art prints, we have decided to pay homage to some of the all time great touring car racers to have graced the world’s racing circuits. We start with some of Germany’s finest from the 1970’s – Ford’s all-conquering Capri, Mercedes’ ‘Red Pig’ and from BMW, the ‘Batmobile.’
The Capri was launched in 1969 as the European counterpart to the wildly popular Mustang in the USA. Ford had been using motor racing as their main marketing tool throughout the sixties and it was no surprise that the Motorsport Department in Cologne, was charged with turning the Capri into a race winning car. It went on to win the 1972 European Touring Car Championship and race at the 24 Hours of Le Mans twice, once in 1972 and then again in 1973.
Arguably AMG’s most iconic vehicle, the Mercedes-Benz 300 SEL ‘Red Pig’ jump-started the small company’s rise to fame, leading to Mercedes-Benz’s eventual takeover of the tuning house. At the 1971 24 Hours of Spa, the car won its class and finished 2nd overall, having started 5th on the grid.
During the mid-1970's BMW dominated the European Touring Car Championship with their 3.0 CSL dubbed the 'Batmobile'. It also raced at Le Mans and won the 1975 IMSA GT Championship over in the United States.
