Road to Dakar
Last week at the Tunisia Desert Challenge’s starting line, this incredible 1991 911 (964) Carrera 4 turned up. Car&vintage (C&v) have teamed up with CountrysideWays and TAG Heuer to produce this restomod rally-raider to tackle the event as a warm-up for the Dakar Classic next year. C&v founder Alberto Vassallo is co-driver to Agostino Rizzardi for both event.
On this occasion Agostino’s CountrysideWays’ Porsche 911 desert car has been hand-painted with a street art-styled livery created by BorromeodeSilva. However, this will not be the official colour scheme for the Saudi Arabian event, but just a temporary bodywork made for the Road To Dakar announcement.
Graffiti became popular in the 80s, and with its popularity reached a commercial level through in advertising, fashion etc. But due to its raw appearance never really ended up on racing cars, maybe the odd art car, but generally they always stuck to their geometric and symmetrical designs. Following the Milan-based studio’s design suggestions, Marco Riper designed this disruptive livery which tones and details will mutate kilometre after kilometre, dune after dune.
Countrysideways’ 1991 964 Carrera 4 has been almost entirely modified, its 5-speed manual gearbox and its flat-6 engined, upgraded in order to perform on long distance high temperature runs, are the only parts kept from the original car. The team took many inspirations from the 953, the official Porsche 911 variant that won the 1984 Paris-Dakar driven by René Metge and Dominique Lemoyne.
The chassis has been completely strengthen and lighten, gifted with a roll cage. Larger tanks provide fuel to the car’s 300+ hp engine. Tyres are the same 35” BFGoodrich All-Terrain’s used by MINI to win the Dakar three times in a row with; double wishbone suspension and adjustable Reiger shock absorbers with separated oil tanks.
