The Mezger 16: The engine that never raced

As an extension of their Plain Bodies series, London-based INK have crafted the ‘Mezger 16’, the sixteen-cylinder engine of the 1970 Porsche 917 Prototype, engineered by the late Hans Mezger. These images feature this engineering marvel in its purest form, elevating the mechanical details and complexity, finding beauty in its functional design and raw power.

The 917 Prototype engine, a 6.6 litre, 750PS flat-sixteen, was developed to increase the power of Porsche’s racing cars and their presence on the tracks to match the power of the competition in the Can-Am championship. Coming in at a hefty 80kg heavier than the existing 917 12-cylinder engine, along with a longer wheelbase, the engine never made it to the track.

This collection of fully CGI stills celebrate this 16-cylinder marvel, having been intricately modelled in 3D by the team at INK from scratch. The level of detail is simply stunning.

Following the recent passing of the legendary Porsche engineer, these images honour the work of Mezger whose innovation propelled Porsche across the finish line, making the brand synonymous with success in motorsport.
