Clockwork Orange
Produced by Marcos Engineering and offered intermittently between 1964 and 1990, this fibreglass bodied, wooden chassis sports car weighed a little over 800kg. The GT was first introduced as the Marcos 1800 in 1964, featuring a Volvo P1800 engine, although later models has steel chassis’ with Ford engines, although others power units were available.
The car was out of production from 1972 to 1981, when small scale kit production recommenced. The original GT continued to be built until 1990, being developed into its altered Mantula form. This was further developed into more powerful and aggressively-styled designs, culminating in the 1994 LM600, which went on to compete in the 1995 Le Mans 24-hour race.
This example is a 1968 Marcos 1600, which after being left dormant outside for 24 years has recently undergone an extensive restoration. The work included an all new fibreglass body and plywood chassis sourced from Marcos, a rebuild and overbore of its Ford Kent crossflow engine, new orange paintwork, and custom leather upholstery. It recently sold on Bring a Trailer for just over $60,000.
