The McLaren F1 and it's record-breaking run
It’s been 25 years since the McLaren F1 first redefined what was possible in a road car. To celebrate this momentous anniversary, McLaren have produced this film of the story behind Andy Wallace and his incredible record-breaking top speed run at the Ehra-Lessien high-speed proving ground in Germany.
Some world records tumble each and every year, while others last for decades. On the 31st of March 1998, Andy Wallace reached a speed of 240.14mph in the McLaren F1 – making it the fastest production car in the world – a record that stood well into the next millennium. The F1 remains the fastest naturally aspirated production car ever built.
In this new video, Andy himself talks us through each and every moment of his record-breaking run. The landmark speed he achieved was taken as a combined average of a run in two opposing directions.
